“Agree to Disagree”
• First, have students write down a person opinion on a note card.
• Then have students share that opinion with their neighbors.
• When they disagree with an opinion, they are to practice the following steps for disagreeing politely:
Skill Steps:
1. Look at the person.
2. Use a pleasant voice.
3. Say, “I understand how you feel.”
4. Tell why you feel differently.
5. Give a reason.
6. Listen to the other person.
Students keep sharing opinions with their peers until they remember each of the steps and it feels natural to them.
Discussion Questions for students:
1. What do people do when they get angry? How does this affect the people around them?
Brainstorm a list of good ways and not-so-good ways to deal with anger.
2. Name some healthy ways to resolve a conflict with a friend or family member.
3. A successfully resolved conflict doesn’t necessarily end with a “winner” and a “loser.”
